Before you sign: five checks for any agreement

Most contract disputes begin with something that was never read or never written down. These five questions can save you a great deal of trouble.

Most disputes over agreements begin with something that was never read, or never written down. Before you sign, check the following.

  • Are the parties named correctly, with full legal names and addresses?
  • Are the money terms clear: the amount, the dates, taxes, and what happens if payment is late?
  • Does it say how, and when, either side can end the agreement?
  • How will disputes be resolved, and in which place?
  • Is everything that was promised verbally actually written in the document?

Have a lawyer review any agreement that matters before you sign it. It costs far less than a dispute later.
